Reporting to the Superintendent, the Fibre Optic Splicer will be responsible for performing activities related to connecting, testing and validating the integrity of new and existing outside plant telecommunication networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Splicing, testing, and troubleshooting of infrastructure, Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) or customer builds
  • Daily updates, documentation and reporting on work completed
  • Completion of daily safety documentation with a focus on accuracy and potential hazards
  • Inspecting fiber routes and hub sites as preventative maintenance 
  • Strong attention to quality and detail
  • The ability to read and understand all types of drawings or documents to determine the fibre counts being used
  • Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ Fibre Optic splicing experience, preferably in the Bell MTS Network 
  • In depth knowledge of OTDR testing to prove high losses and open locations with accuracy 
  • Previous experience with providing power meter results including documentation 
  • Extensive experience using single fibre fusion sets, ribbon fibre splicing, live fibre identifiers, ribbonizing techniques
  • Proficient in fibre cable termination with connectors a variety of connector types
  • Experience with all types of fibre closures such as PLP Armadillo, PLP Dome, PLP coyote Runts and Tyco 400 or 450 series
  • The understanding of patch panels, pigtails, patch cords and splice boxes
  • Previous hands on experience with connectorizng cables or pigtails using a Corning Unicam or Opti-Snap tool
  • Experience with working in live fibre closures
  • Knowledge of work area protection and safe work practices
  • Electrical Safety Awareness
  • Fall protection
  • Familiar with working in confined spaces or manholes
  • Self-motivated with good organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Although most work will be in Winnipeg a willingness to travel would be consider an asset as we do have projects throughout Canada 
  • Adaptable to flexible work schedule such as nights when required to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work and communicate with others in a team environment
  • Ability to problem solve and work independently
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate respectfully with employees, visitors, and customers
  • Ability to prioritize tasks multiple tasks to ensure customer due dates are met
  • Valid class G driver’s license with a reasonable driver abstract
  • An AZ or DZ will be consider an asset
