Do you have any advice for salary negotiations?

-Shaunna

Dear Shaunna,

Great question. This can be dicey for the job seeker. You don't want to be ruled out because you are asking for too much or not enough.Try to put off actually answering that question until they make an offer.

In today's job market though, negotiations are to be expected. Be prepared and do your homework. Compare the salary ranges on job boards, newspapers, etc., for the job type you are seeking. Check out salaryexpert.com.

If you are pressed to give a range then go 10% higher than your last salary and add $10K to determine the number.

When you have researched this information, you will be able to negotiate confidently and get that job offer!

All the best!

The Canjobs Team

Dear Canjobs,

I want to get a job in Canada. What do I need to do?

Ralph

We asked Kyle C. Hyndman, B.A., LL.B., from www.mccrealaw.ca, to handle this inquiry.

If you are not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, you will probably need a work permit in order to work in Canada. You should apply for this before coming to Canada. If you have questions about obtaining a work permit, we can help. While most foreign workers need to go through a lengthy two-stage process, you may fit into one of the special categories for young people, IT workers, certain professionals and others.

McCrea & Associates is a full-service immigration law firm, providing advice and assistance with work permits, study permits, visas, permanent residence and all other aspects of immigration and citizenship law. Please visit their website at mccrealaw.ca for more information.

I have already signed myself in to create a resume. I would like to know what is best to put in the Resume Headline?

Kelly

Dear Kelly,

Thanks for your email. It is best to put something that will get a potential employer's interest. How creative the title should be, really depends on the type of industry you're in. If you are looking for something in Customer Service, you could put, "A-1 Customer Service Rep". Hope this helps.

Canjobs

Dear Canjobs,

When I cut and paste my resume on your site, the format is all wrong. How do I fix it?

Thanks.

Sue Johnson

Dear Sue,

To preserve the original formatting:

Click FILE, WEB PAGE PREVIEW (this will open the file in the Internet Explorer). Open a second Internet Explorer window. Click VIEW, SOURCE (this will open your file in notepad with HTML codes). Click EDIT, SELECT ALL, this will select the entire file in notepad. The whole file will now be highlighted. Click EDIT, COPY. Open the Internet Explorer window with the CanJobs web site, click in the resume box to place the cursor inside. Right click with the mouse and select PASTE. The resume will be in HTML code within the box, however when you preview the resume, it has preserved the formatting from the Word version of the resume.

All the best in your job search!

Sincerely,

Canjobs
